I don't know French, and I'm not trying to show off.. But Papillon does sound so much better than 'butterfly'.
The context: Sad things happen. Things which we desperately try to wish away. We are disappointed, we get hurt, we grieve. We feel nostalgic about the past, sorry for the present, and pessimistic about the future. It seems like nothing can make us feel better and every little thing connects up in some way to the pain. It seems like its never going to end, and we drive ourselves crazy. We start spinning our silk threads, threads of the past, and we wrap ourselves in them. Forgetting seems impossible and we wind those cords tighter and tighter. We are left in darkness. The world is still beautiful outside - the sun, the fresh wind, the flowers: but we can't see any of it. But simultaneously, we begin to introspect. We change and grow and learn about ourselves. We begin to loosen those threads. The cocoon isn't so comfortable anymore. Our wings are too big to fit in. The cords come loose. We flap our wings and escape. The threads were beautiful, but they are not for us. We learnt from the cocoon too, but it was too dark in there. We want our wings, we miss the sunshine. And each time we are hurt, the same cycle repeats itself. It's amazing how much we learn from the sadness, and its amazing how beautiful the metamorphosis seems when we can look at it from a distance.
