Growing Up

Growing up is..
when you know that you've grown up. It's not surprising anymore that you're in your twenties.
when you accept who you are, and realize all that you can never be. Only this time round, it doesn't matter that much. When you realize that accepting what you're not is perhaps harder and more liberating than accepting what you are.
when you see the beauty of pain.. and perhaps for the first time, appreciate it.
when you know when to let go.
when you almost envy those who can smile that innocently. :)
when you know that there are beginnings and ends, but life itself never stops. When halting for some time is not even a choice anymore.
when you feel so distant, oh so distant, from her.
when you can control the person inside, not merely who she appears to be.
when you can compartmentalize your soul, and it doesn't seem so clinical and so impossibly hard.
when you realize that growing up has no beginning and no conceivable end.
when you find out that no one can help you at the end. And that half the fun is in finding out things for yourself. :)

Aah! Why do I see pessimism in the post.
Growing up does not mean you have to give up following your dreams, it does not mean you can't be innocent, it definitely does not mean that you have lost your soul's integrity.
What you describe, I would rather attribute to sort of having given up and the attitude of 'sab aise hi chalta hai'.
You may age, grow older, wiser, experienced ... yet never forget to dream and to follow them, to smile innocently at the small joys of life, to sing and dance like you don't care a bit, to follow your principles and defy the world.

I would recommend you to revisit that video 'Sunscreen' and just listen to the words carefully and let them bring an innocent smile to your face!

Well. It's not really about not-believing-in-dreams-anymore. It's a more general question of believing in life. :) And there was pessimism.. This was written to draw it out. But it's kinda hard to do what you say. But then, that's the trick I guess. :)
