The Sound of Music

Yes, I'm attempting it. I'm finally attempting the attempt to write about something which can't be written about. Hang on, there is a GRE word for this: beauty which can't be described in words. Whatever. Point is, how do you write about music?

Music is something which is so completely complete, so perfectly beautiful, so imponderable, so variegated. How the heck do you write about it? How do you write about what music does to you.. does for you? How do you know what you want to listen to? Because you always know.. which piece, which song fits which mood. How do you explain the different needs? How do you describe how happy music can make you? How much it can liberate you? How much you can be carried up and away by Mozart? How do you explain how your fingers strum a guitar you don't own and can't play, why they beat a rhythm you can't write? Why they plink plonk on the keys you wish you knew how to manipulate?

How do you explain the feeling you get of identifying yourself with the piece? Of the piece identifying with you? Of how you feel at that moment when only you can hear this in those bars? How do you explain how you're sure that this song was written for you? Of how this song understands you? And then you realize how incomplete dance would be without music. Because ultimately you dance to the rhythm, you dance for the rhythm. Music, this is an ode to you!

Beak de Nature, what more do I have to say!

I will go with two things:

1. "something that cannot be described in words" - ineffable

2. I quote a dear friend Sriku who spoke out the most beautiful line here: "Something as abstract as human emotion may often be impossible to capture in words. You need something equally abstract, like music." The incredibly insanely joyful state produced by it cannot be described. How wonderful it is that there exist things in this world about which we can say so!

1. :P Sometimes, I do not like knowing you and Sushant.

2. That's a beautiful thought. But sometimes we overestimate the accuracy of words. Words can convey so much more than their literal meaning. Words can convey a conception of beauty. They can be as evocative of the memory of beauty as being directly beautiful themselves. But perhaps, not as beautiful as music.

3. And tis true! It's a wonderful world. :)
